The Aegean Sea is named after King Aegeus of Athens, Greece (Hellas) who drowned himself in the sea after believing his son, Theseus, had died during his quest to slay the Minotaur in Crete. When Theseus forgot to hoist a white sail to signal his success, his father, Aegeus, seeing the expected black sail of defeat, threw himself from a cliff into the sea below

The Aegean Sea of Greece (Hellas) is so blue due to a lack of phytoplankton and suspended particles, which allows sunlight to penetrate deep and scatter, reflecting the blue wavelength. Its clear, calm waters and a light-colored seafloor, often made of crushed marble, also contribute to its intense blue hue by reflecting light more effectively. The water itself also absorbs red and yellow light more than blue light, further enhancing the blue appearance, especially in large depths

The Early Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic II (2700–2400/2300 BC) marks the heyday of the Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic civilization, with the expansion of settlements and cemeteries, the development of metalwork (bronze weapons and tools), the flourishing of marble sculpture (excellent figurines and vases) and an increase in trade exchanges with mainland Greece, Crete and the Aegean. The Early Greek Cycladic III (2300–2000 BC) is the last phase of the civilization, which is characterized by the decline and change in the characteristics of pottery.

The achievements of vase painting during the Early Greek Cycladic II and Early Greek Cycladic III periods and the introduction of polychrome in the decoration of Middle Cycladic vases certainly contributed to the emergence of painting as an important means of artistic expression. Thus, while the Early Cycladic period could be characterized as the century of sculpture for the Cyclades, the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000–1650 BC), -Middle Cycladic- and the early Late Cycladic could justifiably claim the title of the century of great painting.

Το Αιγαίο Πέλαγος πήρε το όνομά του από τον βασιλιά Αιγέα της Αθήνας, ο οποίος πνίγηκε στη θάλασσα επειδή πίστευε ότι ο γιος του, Θησέας, είχε πεθάνει κατά τη διάρκεια της προσπάθειάς του να σκοτώσει τον Μινώταυρο στην Κρήτη. Όταν ο Θησέας ξέχασε να σηκώσει ένα λευκό πανί για να σηματοδοτήσει την επιτυχία του, ο πατέρας του, Αιγέας, βλέποντας το αναμενόμενο μαύρο πανί της ήττας, έπεσε από έναν γκρεμό στη θάλασσα από κάτω.


Τα ελληνικά νησιά κατοικούνται συνεχώς από Ελληνες και είναι σημαντικά εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια, με ανθρώπινη εγκατάσταση που χρονολογείται από τη Ελληνικη Νεολιθική περίοδο (περίπου 7000 π.Χ.).

Το Αιγαίο Πέλαγος της Ελλάδας είναι τόσο μπλε λόγω της έλλειψης φυτοπλαγκτού και αιωρούμενων σωματιδίων, γεγονός που επιτρέπει στο ηλιακό φως να διεισδύει βαθιά και να διασκορπίζεται, αντανακλώντας το μπλε μήκος κύματος. Τα καθαρά, ήρεμα νερά του και ο ανοιχτόχρωμος βυθός του, συχνά φτιαγμένος από θρυμματισμένο μάρμαρο, συμβάλλουν επίσης στην έντονη μπλε απόχρωση του, αντανακλώντας το φως πιο αποτελεσματικά. Το ίδιο το νερό απορροφά επίσης το κόκκινο και το κίτρινο φως περισσότερο από το μπλε φως, ενισχύοντας περαιτέρω την μπλε εμφάνιση, ειδικά σε μεγάλα βάθη.

Ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα δημιουργήματα του ελληνικού πολιτισμού του Αιγαίου είναι η τέχνη του, μοναδική στην εποχή του, όχι μόνο στο Αιγαίο αλλά και σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Η λιτότητα και η ευρηματικότητα που χαρακτηρίζουν τον καλλιτέχνη της Εποχής του Χαλκού αντικατοπτρίζονται στα αντικείμενα που παράγει. Από εκείνη την αρχαία εποχή, το Αιγαίο είναι πνευματικά φορτισμένο και αντικατοπτρίζεται στη λογοτεχνία, την ποίηση και την τέχνη.

Η Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙΙ (2300–2000 π.Χ.) είναι η τελευταία φάση του πολιτισμού, η οποία χαρακτηρίζεται από την παρακμή και την αλλαγή στα χαρακτηριστικά της κεραμικής.

Τα επιτεύγματα της αγγειογραφίας κατά την Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙ και την Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική ΙΙΙ περίοδο και η εισαγωγή της πολυχρωμίας στη διακόσμηση των Μεσοκυκλαδικών αγγείων σίγουρα συνέβαλαν στην ανάδειξη της ζωγραφικής ως σημαντικού μέσου καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης. Έτσι, ενώ η Πρώιμη Κυκλαδική περίοδος θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως ο αιώνας της γλυπτικής για τις Κυκλάδες, η Μέση Εποχή του Χαλκού (περ. 2000–1650 π.Χ.), η -Μεσοκυκλαδική- και η πρώιμη Ύστερη Κυκλαδική θα μπορούσαν δικαιολογημένα να διεκδικήσουν τον τίτλο του αιώνα της μεγάλης ζωγραφικής.

The local culinary traditions date back to ancient times and they are an intrinsic part of the Aegean Culture. Top quality ingredients wear the aromas of the earth: oregano, thyme, bay leaves, rosemary, lemons, and olive oil. Each island’s microclimate has contributed to the growth of flavourful produce, some of which are unique across the world.

The Aegean landscape hides fragrant and tasty surprises to visitors who want to explore its rough barren hills and volcanic soil, its olive groves that grow on dry soil and its rocky shores. Savour boiled greens picked from the mountains, sprinkled with olive oil and lemon juice as a side dish to your grilled meat or fish dish. A large variety of aromatic plants and herbs, such as oregano, savory, marjoram and thyme flavour marinades and stews cooked in lemon sauce. Capers and crithmum (rock samphire) are two wild plants that thrive by the seashore and they make some excellent appetizers to enjoy with your tsipouro drink.

Fresh Fish & Seafood Appetizers

Fish can be cooked in various ways as long as you use your imagination… and in this department Greeks fare well. Small or medium sized fish are floured and fried in sizzling olive oil which turns them into crispy treats, sometimes served along with a tasty sourish marinade-sauce called ‘savoro’. To make this sauce locals use olive oil, quality vinegar, rosemary, and oregano – it’s the standard recipe on most of the islands.

On Tinos Island people add petimezi (grape molasses) to their food, which lends their creations a particular flavour. Other dishes you’ll love are: red mullets with a barley rusk crust on Mytilini, Lesvos Island; oven-baked fish with sesame paste (tachini) on Rhodes Island; chub mackerel with capers; grouper stew with onions; kakavia soup (made with rockfish); picarel omelette on Santorini and Syros Islands; a fish pie made with Mediterranean sand smelt on Kimolos Island; stuffed squid with rice or feta cheese, cuttlefish with fennel and olives, to name but a few…

Make sure you also taste some special mezedes (meaning titbits) with your tsipouro or ouzo drink, such as salt-cured sardines from Mytilini, grilled sun-dried chub mackerel (gouna) from Paros Island, a salad with herring roe from Syros Island, marinated anchovies and salt-cured tuna.

Delicious summer teasers!

With the thousands dispersed islands, the deep blue clear seas, and the innumerable leeward bays, Greece is the ideal place for hundreds of shelfish to be found in abundance. Hundreds of species of shellfish reside in the Greek seas. No matter what the geographical variation of their names is, they keep the aromas of the sea well enclosed in their tiny bodies.

Mussels, with their black lustrous colour and the hair between the two shells, are usually attached on rocks in shallow waters. Oysters are stunning like scarlet gems with an iodine scent. Scallops are well-known for their brackish taste and their tender heart well protected by the hard shell.

Pen shells stand on the bottom of the sea – sometimes ajar- on the alert for capturing their food; their allies are two little shrimps that bite their tender parts whenever there is enemy at the gates. With a taste reminiscent of oyster, there are the red and sharp arca shells. Thorny sea urchins encompass gold and red eggs. Sea figs resemble hairy stones in a dark khaki tone. Clams shine in their brownish shell which keeps their skin juicy and delicious.

The sea on your table

Raw or cooked, shellfish reach the top of their taste potential when served with lemon. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mussels: hot with just a drop of olive oil; fried with feta, oregano and other spices; in souvlaki; in a mussel pilaf.
  • Clams, oysters, sea figs and arca shells are best when eaten raw with lemon.
  • Pen shells: when fried they taste like crabs.
  • Sea urchins provide irresistible delicious salads with a strong sea aroma.
  • Scallops are wonderful whether grilled, fried, or cooked with pasta on a tomato sauce.

History

After the death of Nikola Tesla, an American court, in January 1943, awarded custody of his property to Sava Kosanović. the son of Tesla’s youngest sister Marica. Sava Kosanović was a Serbian politician, publicist and diplomat who, at that time, was living in New York as a member of the Royal Yugoslav Government-in-exile.

Following his death, Tesla’s entire property was packed, sealed and handed over to the Office of Alien Property Custodian. His belongings were transferred from the New Yorker Hotel to the Manhattan Warehouse and Storage Co. where some of Tesla’s property was already stored.

On the initiative of Sava Kosanović, all Nikola Tesla’s personal property and writings were shipped to Belgrade, where Kosanović subsequently presented them to the state. Packed in sixty packages, suitcases, metal trunks and barrels, the legacy of Nikola Tesla arrived on the ship Serbia in the port of Rijeka in September, 1951. The material was then transferred by train to Belgrade, where it was stored in the Belgrade University Faculty of Electrical Engineering. In June, 1952, it was moved from the Faculty to the Genčić Villa at 51 Proleterskih Brigada, as the street was then known. That address is now the Museum.

On the basis of Article 80, Paragraph 2, of the Yugoslav Constitution, and at the proposal of the Government Council for Science and Culture, the Yugoslav Government, on December 5, 1952, resolved to establish the Nikola Tesla Museum. This resolution was signed by Josip “Tito” Broz, and published in the Official Gazette no. 59, on December 10 that year. The same year, Veljko Korać, a professor of the Belgrade University Faculty of Philosophy, was appointed the founding director.

The Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade was opened to the public on October 20, 1955. It was the first technical museum in Yugoslavia. The opening presented the permanent exhibition, which gave visitors the opportunity to see models built accurately according to Tesla’s drawings.

The museological work of the Nikola Tesla Museum may be seen as beginning in 1957, when the urn received by the Museum went on display as a permanent exhibit. On October 9, 1969, the city of Belgrade took over the founding rights, based on the agreement concluded between the city of Belgrade and the Federation. On May 21, 2020, at the proposal of the Ministry of Culture and Information, the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Decision on taking over the founding rights of the Nikola Tesla Museum (number 022-3929/2020). The City of Belgrade transferred all founding rights, obligations and responsibilities to the Republic of Serbia free of charge, and the Nikola Tesla Museum received the status of a republican cultural institution.

The Nordic countries cluster near the top in education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life and human development. Each country has its own economic and social model, sometimes with large differences from its neighbors. Still, they share aspects of the Nordic model of economy and social structure to varying degrees. This includes a mixed market economy combined with strong labor unions and a universalist welfare sector financed by high taxes, enhancing individual autonomy and promoting social mobility. There is a high degree of income redistribution, commitment to private ownership and little social unrest.

“Nordic countries” include Norway, Sweden, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands), Finland, and Iceland. These five countries use the Nordic Council to work together on political and cultural activities. Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are also members of the European Union, but only Finland is part of the eurozone, meaning that it uses the Euro as its money. The other Nordic countries still use their own money, called krone or krona (from the word “crowns”). Norway and Iceland, which are not members of the EU, are members of NATO and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Only Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of both the EU and NATO.

The very low population density in much of Scandinavia, except Denmark, means that there is often more nature preserved in these countries, resulting in the beautiful forests, tundras, and fjords that you’ll find across the Nordics.

The Nordic countries cluster near the top in education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of life and human development. Each country has its own economic and social model, sometimes with large differences from its neighbors. Still, they share aspects of the Nordic model of economy and social structure to varying degrees. This includes a mixed market economy combined with strong labor unions and a universalist welfare sector financed by high taxes, enhancing individual autonomy and promoting social mobility. There is a high degree of income redistribution, commitment to private ownership and little social unrest.

“Nordic countries” include Norway, Sweden, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands), Finland, and Iceland. These five countries use the Nordic Council to work together on political and cultural activities. Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are also members of the European Union, but only Finland is part of the eurozone, meaning that it uses the Euro as its money. The other Nordic countries still use their own money, called krone or krona (from the word “crowns”). Norway and Iceland, which are not members of the EU, are members of NATO and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Only Denmark, Sweden and Finland are members of both the EU and NATO.

The very low population density in much of Scandinavia, except Denmark, means that there is often more nature preserved in these countries, resulting in the beautiful forests, tundras, and fjords that you’ll find across the Nordics.
